A Strange Occurrence

by B. A. Brown

Hmmm.

We have a bag of peanut butter flavored dog biscuits.

We have a bag of beef basted dog biscuits.

Katie loves the beef-basted.

Maggie loves the peanut butter ones.

The bags are the same size. The peanut butter ones are actually smaller than the beef ones; as they are sold by weight, one presumes that there would be a few additional peanut butter ones in the bag.

Each dog gets ONE of her favorite kind in the morning, and ONE after dinner.
Healthy Pets Especially Dogs
I usually keep the bags atop the washing machine.

I have been doing laundry for two days.

[No, I don't have that much laundry: the dogs do. Dog towels, dog sheets for the laundry room floor, dog sheets for the couches and chairs in case the laundry room floor dog sheets and the dog towels do not completely clean the dog paws of mud. It has been raining for days. Mud is extensive.]

Since the washing machine has been in use, the dog biscuit bags were stored on the floor.

I forgot the breakfast biscuits; they have been reminding me of SOMETHING for hours. I just now figured it out - Oh, I forgot their biscuits this morning.

We all go to the laundry room. I pick up the bag nearest me: beef basted. I give one to Katie.

I pick up the other bag: peanut butter.

The bag is empty.

Huh?

The beef biscuits are two-thirds full. The peanut butter biscuits are gone.

I give, reluctantly, a beef-basted one to Maggie. She spits it out.

I pick up the one she rejected and offer it to her again. She refuses.

I pick up the empty peanut butter biscuit bag, shake it at her, and inquire just WHO it was who emptied the bag.

Maggie picks up the beef-basted and scurries away.
