Fetch! Run Human, Run!!

by Lorine of The Dog Team

Barley doesn't know how to play. I bought her toys. She ran, terrified, the first time I put one in her bed with her. I bought her a sqeaky toy. She cowered the first time it made it noise, then began running frantically in circles.

I bought a ball. Several balls. Barley sat and watched this silly display while the balls disappeared in the woods and long grass at the back of the house.

I bought a frisbee. She sat at my feet and watched me throw. I got a lot of exercise retrieving that frisbee.....

Okay I decided, perhaps she just needs to see the play action modelled. I enlisted hubby's help. I threw the frisbee. Hubby ran and 'fetched' it, bringing it back to me. Barley sat at my feet and watched.

I petted hubby, I said enthusiastically "Good boy!". He panted and wiggled his butt.

I threw the frisbee again, yelling "Fetch!". Hubby ran and fetched it while Barley watched.

We repeated this until hubby was panting in ernest from all the running. Barley sat and watched us with a puzzled look on her face.

I'm sure she was thinking it was all pretty much a waste of time and what were her humans getting so excited about? The frisbees and balls and other toys sit on the back deck, unused.
