Paws to Read

The mission of the PAWS TO READ Program is to improve the literacy skills of children with the assistance of registered canine reading companions in a fun and relaxed environment. Research with therapy animals indicates that children with low self-esteem are often more willing to interact with an animal than another person. Also in Canada at Therapeutic Paws to Read

Educational TV? pfui

by B. A. Brown

The Eukanuba Dog Show was less than educational and, if you judge by the interest evinced by the canine members of my household, incredibly boring.

I made them watch. They kept nodding off.

I pointed with awe at the screen: "LOOK! That dog called 911 and saved her Mom's life!"

They raised their heads for a brief moment, and then dropped back down, soon snoring.

"LOOK!" I exclaimed! "Look at those gorgeous dogs!"

This generated a bit more interest, but only briefly.

"Look at how they walk so nicely on their leashes!"

Yawn. Big sigh.

"Look at how they sit pretty so the judge can feel their coats and big strong bodies!"

Yawn, mutter, shoulder roll, brief stretch.

"LOOK! Look at these cute little toy dogs!"

Turn over, sigh.

"Look! That police dog saved his Dad, got shot a bunch of times and still came back to work."

Silence.

"Sit up and look! German shepherd! Just like your dog mommy"!

Stretch, sigh, momentary glance at the screen.

"I'm taking you to obedience school!"

snore. snore.

"POUND!!"

Two dogs get up, mutter, toss dirty looks over their shoulders, leave the room.

So much for the value of educational tv.
