Paws to Read

The mission of the PAWS TO READ Program is to improve the literacy skills of children with the assistance of registered canine reading companions in a fun and relaxed environment. Research with therapy animals indicates that children with low self-esteem are often more willing to interact with an animal than another person. Also in Canada at Therapeutic Paws to Read

Barley

Barley is a Rescue Dog. She is 5 years old, an Australian Shepherd aka an Aussie, who we adopted from a local shelter. She has gorgeous grey 'wolf' eyes and is very intelligent and athletic. Unfortunately she has some rather serious issues and displays neurotic and obssesive-compulsive behaviors coupled with extreme anxiety regarding pretty much everything. She watches over Webley and tolerates his puppy playfulness. When tired of his biting and climbing all over her, she leaves but as soon as he whimpers or cries she runs back to him.

Webley

Webley is a 3 month old Shih-tzu. We bought him when he was 2 months old. He is about 12 lb, black and white with some apricot. His mother was apricot. He is curious, lively and intelligent. Although tiny, he is determined to be alpha over Barley.

Mom & Dad

Mom and Dad live on a 100-acre hobby farm. They have a donkey, dozens of chickens and guinea fowl and two sheep. They often have other animals too such as turkeys, homing pigeons and rabbits. Coyotes, wolves, raccons, minks, weasels and stray dogs have killed many birds and rabbits over the years, so they are always having to replace livestock.

The sheep have also been attacked by wolves but the donkey has done his job to protect them. In fact we have the only sheep that ever survived a wolf attack in this area. Queen Princess, our white sheep, had her throat ripped open by a wolf. Donkey stomped it til it ran off, and when we found Queen Princess in the morning she was near death.

Our vet operated and saved her. When we applied for the township money for a sheep attacked by a wolf, they did not know how to handle the application as over 50 sheep were killed by coyotes or wolves in our area last year - there had never been a case of one surviving. So the money is for replacement of a dead sheep but we wanted it to pay the vet bill! The township paid, and our farm and animals are becoming infamous in our area.
