Famous Dogs
Who were some famous dogs in history, in movies, in books?
How about Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, Tinkerbell, Cujo, Old Yeller, Astro, Taco Bell Chihuahua, Clifford the Big Red Dog, The Littlest Hobo... Famous dogs can be real or fictious but most of us have heard their names.
Movie & Television Star Dogs
- The "Taco Bell Chihuahua" in the Taco Bell advertising campaign was played by Gidgit, a female Chihuahua
- Spuds McKenzie in the role of the Budweiser spokes-dog was played by Honey Tree Evil Eye, a female Bull Terrier
- Ace the Wonder Dog appeared in numerous films and film serials in the 1930s and 1940s.
- Beasley, a Dogue de Bordeaux, starred in the film Turner & Hooch
- Higgins played the leading role of Benji in the movie of the same name and had a role on the TV Series Petticoat Junction
- Pal, a Collie, played Lassie in the movie Lassie Come Home
- Rin Tin Tin was the name given to several German Shepherd Dogs who starred in many Warner Brothers film and television productions.
- Terry, a Cairn Terrier, played Toto in the 1939 movie adaptation of The Wizard of Oz
- London played Hobo in The Littlest Hobo television series
- Maui, a mixed breed dog, played Murray on the TV show Mad About You
Faith & Loyalty
- Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye Terrier in Edinburgh, Scottland, was loyal to his master long after his master's death in 1858. Until Bobby's death 14 years later, he reportedly spent every night at his master's grave
- Old Shep, a Border Collie, who maintained a vigil at the station for over five years after the coffin of his master was loaded onto a train in Fort Benton, Montana in 1936

- Farley Mowat's dog Mutt was featured in his novel "The Dog Who Wouldn't Be" written in 1957
- Snoopy, Charlie Brown's dog, first stood on his hind legs in 1958 in the "Peanuts" comic stip by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz
- Charley, a poodle owned by John Steinbeck, was written about in the book Travels With Charley

Rescue Dogs
- Gandalf, a black Shiloh Shepherd Search and Rescue dog owned by Misha Marshall, found missing boy scout Michael Auberry in March of 2007
- Togo, a Siberian Husky, was the lead dog who covered the most distance during the 1925 serum run to Nome to take diphtheria antitoxin by dog sled across Alaska.
- Velvet, a black Labrador Retriever and shepherd cattle mixed breed dog, helped save three climbers when they became stranded on Mount Hood in Oregon on February 18, 2007.
