Paws to Read

The mission of the PAWS TO READ Program is to improve the literacy skills of children with the assistance of registered canine reading companions in a fun and relaxed environment. Research with therapy animals indicates that children with low self-esteem are often more willing to interact with an animal than another person. Also in Canada at Therapeutic Paws to Read

The Dog Team

The Dog Team consist of Kelly from the USA and Lorine from Canada. One of our contributing authors is B. A. Brown of Seattle Washington. Kelly hasn't turned in her bio yet, but it's coming soon.

Lorine

Lorine is an avid genealogist who maintains several websites, among them Olive Tree Genealogy which she set up on the 'net in 1996. She lives on a 100 acre hobby farm in northern Ontario, Canada with plenty of room for all the animals she and her husband have.

The list today consists of 2 sheep (Ewe-lysses S Grant & Queen Princess), one Mammoth Jack donkey (Burr), about a dozen Guinea Fowl, 4 laying hens, 10 chickens (hens & Roosters), and 2 dogs - Barley the Australian Shepherd and Webley the Shih-tzu.
They used to have about 40 rabbits, 75 laying hens, 30 plus guinea fowl, 2 donkeys (brothers, Ito & Burr) and 2 dozen homing pigeons. Every animal except the donkeys roamed freely around the property. At one time they also had turkeys and several Canadian geese babies. People nearby just keep dropping off animals for them to take in!

Barley and both donkeys were adopted from rescue societies. The donkeys had been neglected and were in a terrible state, near starvation. Lorine wanted one donkey to guard the sheep Brian bought (true to form he went out for one and came back with two, saying that one would be lonely on its own...). But when she saw the poor brothers, babies about 1 and 2 years old, she couldn't separate them. So both came home. Sadly Ito died two years at the very young age of 5.

The homing pigeons, rabbits and many of the hens and guinea fowl have been killed off over the years by natural predators - foxes, wolves, coyotes and stray dogs. She's had a few guineau fowl nest and have keets (babies) but those now have started to die of old age

Australian Shepherd Barley & Shih-tzu WebleyBarley was given up at age 5 and has some serious pyschological problems. She suffers from obsessive-compulsive behaviours with separation anxiety and confinement anxiety. She's only been with Lorine for 3 months and is proving to be a challenge, but on her anti-anxiety medications she is starting to settle down slightly. Barley has to be leashed when inside as she frantically paces without stopping otherwise. Leashing seems to calm her down. She was never spayed or house-trained so that is another problem that Lorine is currently dealing with. Barley doesn't know how to play and is terrified of toys (or anything new) so Lorine is working slowly on that problem area.

Webley was bought from a breeder one month ago when he was 8 weeks old. It was a trial basis to see if having a puppy around might help Barley focus on something other than her paranoia and anxiety. So far it is working well, the dogs like each other and Barley is starting to learn how to play (only a bit but better than before!). Webley is a lively happy little pup eager to explore his environment. He is paper trained and crate trained although he still has the occassional accident.

Lorine has had an assortment of dogs over the years - A collie named Gandalf, 2 Siberian Huskies (Lupus & Kyra), a Rottweiller (Fritz), a mixed Lhasa Apso-Poodle named Suki and now Barley and Webley.

B. A. Brown

B. A. Brown is an avid napper and snacker who hopes to maintain a website someday. But only if it looks as though this internet thing might be around for a while.

She lives in a tiny house on a small fenced-in lot in Seattle. One chair is hers, she shares the rest with Katie and Maggie.

She used to ride and ski and participate in a number of sports. There is very little time for those pursuits now that she has discovered Power Napping.

B.A. has lived with a variety of dogs and cats over the years, and has shared her life with many equines: race horses, broodmares, riding horses, and a scurrilous pony or two. She has x-rays and emergency room bills to prove all of it. She also has an impressive collection of veterinary bills.

She is a dedicated housekeeper who follows a healthy, well-balanced diet, and maintains strict adherence to a regimen of exercise, contemplation, education and self-improvement.

[That was just in case her parents read this] .
